Day 30-33 – May 15th to 18th – Clamecy PK114 to Auxerre PK 174 Canal du Nivernais
Today, Wednesday 18th May, we arrived in the large city of Auxerre at the end of the Canal du Nivernais. It is quite strange to go from really rural France to full on city life with all the hustle and bustle, for the first 10 minutes in town we felt like the Clampetts.
The last days of the Canal du Nivernais have lived up to expectations, exceptional scenery and beautiful small villages and towns, the following photos hopefully give a flavour of the last 60 kilometres of the Nivernais and include the lovely town of Clamecy at the start and Vermenton in the middle of the journey.
Moored at Clamecy
Very old narrow streets in Clamecy
Something beautiful about this
The climbing rocks at Merry-sur-yonne
This statue of gorgeous young lady sits after the lock Mailly la ville
Looks even better from the rear!
Dawn at Mailly
Helping the lock keepers is expected
A colourful visitor
Vermenton is well worth a stop over
Most towns in this area have retained and refurbished the old bath houses
Gladys is having a wonderful time
Got any bread
magical streams in Vermenton
It is that time of year when new life is everywhere
Was he wearing the hat for a bet?

Hi
Any clues on planning a good route …start Decize in Sept 2016… for one week…
Seems difficult to get a useful canal map!
Cheers

With only a week you only have a limited choice, although you can go several different ways, either up the Nivernais or turn right or left down or up the lateral. Just for a week perhaps go to Nevers and back.
